| 2004 was a great year for music, my iPOD has never been busier. Here are the tracks I spent most time listening to.
When did You Stop Loving Me, by Marvin Gaye: After four years a new album and wondrous too. Many tracks could have made it here - I am still drinking them in and my favourite is changing daily. I must do an album of my best-of-U2, but that would need eternity! Golden (Original West Coast Mix), by Jill Scott: Golden is the first single from the album Beautifully Human. I first saw her in London on the 15th November 2000 following the release of her first album. Now, four years later, the second studio album and I caught her live in London on the 20th November 2004. I love the energy in this track - hear that voice - not just singing but pouring. And I love the values in the lyrics as I aim to live my life like it's Golden. The album called Council Estate of Mind. It is tough to listen to this album as it contains the voices of violence and hate. I have lived with words like this in my work for many years and don't want it on an album between some fab songs. Love the songs - not the violence. I love this track. From the album The New Danger one of many hip-hop albums I have loved this year. More from the album The New Danger, I could have included many tracks. With vocals by Sidsel Endresen, the album called Out Here. In There. My favourite Norwegian artiste who I seem to include every year. Cieli di Toscana - knock my socks off - I find this deep and wondrously spiritual. Love the spoken voice of Bono and everything else about him. People Get Ready, by Terry Callier: Album called Alive, and great it is too. He played at Greenbelt this year and I missed him as I was being bouncer for another great artiste. The album The Beautiful Struggle, love this stuff and believe he is a talent for the future not just now. I have many selection boxes filled with these guys! The album The College Dropout, a big star of mine during this year - an immense talent. The single was released on iTunes well before the January 2005 release to the world by The Chemical Brothers. I love the sounds and energy in this and it gets me dancing. Grom Speak Your Peace, hmmm. From The Beautiful Struggle - I cannot keep him off this album. A track which my iMac says I Color have played more than 100 times - then add the ipod and the stereo to that and - and it is a favourite I use much as vibe when I am leading training courses. This song - I first heard played by my favourite DJ Gilles Peterson on his radio show. At the same time a young and beautiful woman, who I worked with, was found dead on her own. Aged 21. Alone. Her death caused by a cocktail of drugs. Found dead on Easter Day 2004. She tried and tried against great odds. This song powerfully speaks to me about her struggle. Beautiful Struggle. Hear the stumbling voice. The shake of emotions. The space between the notes. Hear the lyrics. The striving. The yearning. The encouragement to not just ?be? but ?become?. |
